How to wash clay out of bauxite?

To wash clay out of bauxite, follow these steps:

  1. Crushing and Grinding: First, crush the bauxite to increase the surface area and make it easier to separate the clay.

  2. Screening: Use screens to remove larger particles and separate the fine clay particles from the bauxite ore.

  3. Washing: Use water or a water-based solution to wash away the clay particles. This can be done using attrition scrubbing, where the slurry of crushed bauxite and water is agitated, allowing the clay to break down and separate.

  4. Settling and Decanting: Let the mixture settle in a tank. The heavy bauxite particles will settle at the bottom, and the fine clay particles will remain suspended in the water above. Carefully decant the water containing the clay particles.

  5. Filtration: Pass the slurry through a series of filters to further separate the bauxite from the clay.

  6. Drying: Dry the washed bauxite to remove any remaining moisture.

This process ensures that most of the clay is removed from the bauxite, improving the quality of the ore for further processing.
