How to change concaves in a gyratory crushers

Changing the concaves in a gyratory crusher is a complex and often hazardous task that should only be carried out by trained professionals. Here’s a general step-by-step guide on how it’s typically done:

  1. Preparation:

    • Safety Precautions: Ensure that all safety protocols are in place. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard hats, gloves, safety harnesses, and other equipment as required.
    • Lockout/Tagout: Follow lockout/tagout procedures to ensure the crusher is completely shut down and cannot be restarted accidentally.
  2. Equipment Setup:

    • Tools and Equipment: Ensure all necessary tools and lifting equipment are available and in good working condition. This might include cranes, lifting slings, pneumatic wrenches, and specialized tools indicated in the crusher maintenance manual.
    • Work Area: Clear the area around the crusher, ensuring there is enough space to work and maneuver equipment safely.
  3. Access the Crusher Chamber:

    • Remove Feed Hopper: Detach or lift the feed hopper assembly to gain access to the crusher chamber.
    • Remove Spider Assembly: This is the upper part of the crusher which supports the mantle. It may need to be unbolted and lifted out of place using a crane.
  4. Remove Old Concaves:

    • Access Concaves: Ensure you have clear access to the concaves inside the crushing chamber.
    • Loosen and Remove Fasteners: Carefully loosen and remove the fasteners or retainers holding the old concaves in place. This might involve releasing bolts or other securing mechanisms.
    • Lift Out Old Concaves: Use lifting tools and equipment to carefully remove the old concaves from the crusher.
  5. Install New Concaves:

    • Preparation: Inspect the crusher chamber for any damage or wear that may need addressing before installing new concaves.
    • Position New Concaves: Carefully place the new concaves inside the crusher chamber, ensuring they are properly aligned.
    • Secure New Concaves: Re-fasten the concaves using the appropriate hardware, ensuring they are securely and evenly fitted.
  6. Reassemble Crusher:

    • Reinstall Spider Assembly: Lower and secure the spider assembly back into place.
    • Replace Feed Hopper: Reattach the feed hopper assembly ensuring all connections are secure.
  7. Post-Installation:

    • Inspection: Perform a thorough inspection to ensure all parts are properly installed and there are no loose components.
    • Test Run: Gradually test run the crusher to ensure it operates smoothly and all components function as expected.
    • Documentation: Record the maintenance work for future reference.

Remember, detailed instructions for specific models of gyratory crushers can be found in the manufacturer’s service manual. Always refer to these documents for precise procedures, correct torque settings for fasteners, and other essential details. If in any doubt, consult with the crusher manufacturer or a professional maintenance service.
